Edward "Ed" Thomas Szalanga

Edward (Ed) Thomas Szalanga, 84, formerly of Lakeview, AR, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at Fulton County Hospital. He was born on Dec. 31, 1929 in Detroit, MI. Edward was heartbroken by the deaths of his beloved wife, Anne (Gawa); oldest daughter, Antoinette M. Freed; and only son, Edward Jr. His parents; a brother; and a sister preceded Ed's death. Edward is survived by 2 daughters and 3 sons-in-law; Janet A. Jamison and Allen of West Plains, MO; Kathleen A. Markowitz and Edward (Jeff) of Humble, TX; and Ralph Freed of Kalamazoo, MI. Ed's surviving sister is Blanche Smigelski of West Lafayette, OH. He had 2 granddaughters that he cherished; Emily M. Freed of Kalamazoo, MI; and Danielle A. Gonzales (Jamison) and husband, 1LT Christopher A. Gonzales of Lacey, WA; and has many in-laws; nephews; and nieces. Mr. Szalanga served in the US Navy, retired from Ford Motor Co., and was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Church, Mtn. Home, AR. Arrangements entrusted to Barker Funeral Home of Salem, Arkansas.
