Harris Dale Walker

Harris Dale Walker, 87, of Oxford, Arkansas, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Harris was born February 7, 1935, in Melbourne, Arkansas to Mondell and Rhea (Harris) Walker.

Harris leaves to mourn his passing, daughter, Lisa (Harry) Hammett of Mountain Home, Arkansas; brother, Donald (Pauline) Walker of Mt. Pleasant, Arkansas; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, son Scott Walker, parents, and brother Kenneth Walker.

Harris spent twenty-five years as a history teacher and administrator at Cotter High School in Cotter, Arkansas. He loved his students, and many entertaining stories have been told over the years about "Mr. Walker." He was a star basketball player at Melbourne High School scoring 89 points in a single game, and he went on to play college basketball at Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway. Harris was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. Harris served in the United States Air Force for four years at Everett, Washington.

Harris was united in marriage to Carolyn Lonon on September 6, 1986. Carolyn was born August 30, 1943 in Norfork, Arkansas to Cleo and Margaret (Yale) Lonon and passed from this life on October 21, 2020. Carolyn left to mourn her passing her son, Mike Allen of Ash Flat; daughter, Gina (Stanley) Raymond of Norfork; grandsons, Arran (Amber) Allen of Whiteville, Arkansas, Ethan Raymond of Midway, Arkansas, granddaughters Lacey (Jonathan) Sloan of Newcastle, Wyoming, Tabitha (Josh) Cone of Mountain Home, Arkansas; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Nina Moore of Marshfield, MO, Verna Parker of Springfield, MO; many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Donna Sanford, and great-granddaughter Allea Allen.

Carolyn was an avid reader, a talented artist, sewed beautifully and could generally do anything she set her mind to. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved them very much. Together, Harris and Carolyn enjoyed traveling on their Honda Gold Wings, gardening, and hunting for Native American artifacts. They both worked for Knight Transportation for several years after Harris retired from teaching school.

Memorial services for Harris and Carolyn will be private. Memorials may be made to the Cotter Alumni Association, PO Box 117, Cotter, Arkansas 72626. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home, LLC in Salem, Arkansas.
