Listen to Obituary

Russell Lee McFarren, age 78, of Salem, Arkansas, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was born on June 9, 1947, in Marion, Indiana, to Harry and Aldine (Shaw) McFarren.

On October 14, 1967, Russell was united in marriage to the love of his life, Karen Lynn Fry, in Alton, Missouri. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and faith. Russell was a proud U.S. Army veteran who honorably served his country in the Vietnam War. Following his service, he spent many years working as a corrections officer for the Arkansas Department of Corrections, where he was known for his strength, fairness, and sense of humor.

Russell was a member of the Sturkie Church of Christ and lived his faith through kindness and generosity. He was a joy to be around—always quick with a smile, a story, or a good joke. He loved watching old westerns, spending time outdoors, and hunting. Above all, he cherished time with his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always willing to lend a hand, and those who knew him will remember his laughter, loyalty, and big heart.

He is survived by his son, William Russell “Rusty” McFarren (Fara) of Mountain Home, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Chase Steed (Autumn), Chance Steed (Kelsie), and Chasity Moser (Brian); fourteen great-grandchildren; and his brother, Terry McFarren (Windy) of Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen McFarren; his parents, Harry and Aldine McFarren; his brother, Steve McFarren; his sister, Sandra “Sis” McFarren; and his daughter-in-law, Sandra McFarren.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Barker Funeral Home in Salem, Arkansas. Military honors will be presented at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Barker Funeral Home.
